In chemical production processes, pump and valve equipment plays a central role in fluid transfer and flow control. The choice of material directly affects service life and operational safety. 304 stainless steel castings, with good corrosion resistance and moderate mechanical strength, have become one of the most widely used metallic materials in chemical pump and valve manufacturing. This article provides a systematic analysis of their application from two perspectives—selection rationale and practical use—for the reference of engineering professionals.

304 stainless steel castings belong to the austenitic stainless steel family, containing approximately 18% chromium and 8% nickel. This composition provides strong resistance to various acids, alkalis, and salt solutions under normal temperature conditions. In chemical pump and valve applications, this material is suitable for operating temperatures not exceeding 300°C and medium concentrations at moderate levels. It should be noted that when chloride ion concentration exceeds certain thresholds, 304 stainless steel may suffer from stress corrosion cracking. A thorough assessment of media composition is essential during selection to avoid misuse in high-chloride environments.

When selecting 304 stainless steel castings, engineers must consider multiple parameters such as working pressure, medium temperature, flow velocity, and connection methods. Wall thickness design for pump and valve bodies must meet pressure requirements while avoiding excessive thickness that could cause shrinkage cavities or porosity during casting. Machining accuracy of valve sealing surfaces also influences performance; rough sealing faces can lead to leakage and shorten maintenance cycles. Furthermore, the casting process directly impacts density and mechanical properties—precision casting generally offers better internal uniformity than traditional sand casting.

In medium-corrosive environments such as sulfuric acid or phosphoric acid systems, centrifugal pumps and stop valves made from 304 stainless steel operate stably over several years. In high-chloride environments, engineers often upgrade to 316L to prevent pitting corrosion. For example, a large fertilizer enterprise adopted 304 stainless steel castings for ammonia water pumps in its synthetic ammonia unit. After two production cycles, no significant surface corrosion was observed, and sealing performance remained intact, confirming the material’s reliability under specific operating conditions.

Some engineers underestimate the influence of casting processes on 304 stainless steel performance. Identical chemical compositions processed via precision casting versus sand casting yield notable differences in density and mechanical properties. For pressure-bearing components like chemical pumps and valves, priority should be given to investment casting or lost-wax casting to achieve uniform internal structures, thereby enhancing long-term operational safety margins.
