The precision and performance of metal part castings are 70% determined by the level of mold design and manufacturing. As the “forming matrix,” metal part casting molds must simultaneously meet requirements for structural strength, thermal stability, and dimensional accuracy. Every detail of mold design, from parting line selection to cooling system layout, directly impacts casting quality. This article will analyze the key technical points in the design and manufacturing of metal part casting molds from three dimensions: structure, material, and process.

Mold structure design must consider both functionality and manufacturability. The parting line is the primary consideration in mold design; its location directly affects the difficulty of part ejection and the amount of flash generated. For example, complex-shaped box-type parts often employ multi-parting line designs, using stepped parting to reduce the risk of sand sticking. Axle-type parts, however, prioritize straight parting lines to simplify the machining process. Cavity layout must consider the flow path of molten metal. For parts with significant wall thickness variations, setting up inner gates and overflow channels can balance filling speed and avoid shrinkage defects.

Material selection determines mold durability and cost. In medium to small batch production, HT300 gray cast iron is a common choice for the main mold material due to its good thermal fatigue resistance and low cost. For high-precision requirements or large batch production, H13 steel, with its excellent resistance to thermal cracking and wear, is gradually becoming mainstream. Surface treatment technologies can further extend mold life. For example, applying a titanium nitride coating to the cavity surface can increase mold service life from 5,000 cycles to over 20,000 cycles while reducing the occurrence of sand sticking on the casting surface.

Precision control in manufacturing processes is a crucial guarantee of mold quality. CNC machining centers can achieve micron-level machining of cavity contours. Combined with dimensional verification using coordinate measuring machines, this ensures mold accuracy meets design requirements. For complex curved surfaces, the combined application of EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) and high-speed milling can efficiently complete the machining of challenging structures. The trial molding stage is a critical step in verifying design rationality. By adjusting parameters such as pouring temperature and injection speed, the casting forming effect can be optimized, reducing the number of subsequent mold modifications.
