Within the automotive manufacturing system, precision castings perform critical functions such as connection, support, and transmission; their material properties directly affect the safety and durability of the entire vehicle. The material selection for automotive parts and accessories is a technical task requiring comprehensive consideration of multiple factors, including mechanical indicators, operating temperatures, and corrosive environments. Different casting materials vary significantly in strength, toughness, and heat resistance; engineers must make targeted matches based on the specific working conditions of the component.

Gray iron, due to its high carbon content and good fluidity, is widely used in engine blocks and brake discs. Its flake graphite structure provides excellent vibration damping and noise reduction capabilities, which is particularly crucial for minimizing engine operation vibrations. However, gray iron has low tensile strength and is unsuitable for structural components subjected to high loads; therefore, the direction of force and the usage environment must be strictly distinguished during automotive parts and accessories selection.

Ductile iron undergoes spheroidizing treatment, resulting in a spherical distribution of graphite. Its tensile strength and elongation rate are significantly higher than those of gray iron, making it suitable for critical components subjected to alternating loads, such as crankshafts, steering knuckles, and differential housings. While maintaining good casting properties, its mechanical performance approaches that of cast steel, making it one of the most commonly used materials in the automotive parts and accessories sector. For components requiring both certain strength and good casting fluidity, ductile iron is often a reasonable choice.

Cast steel excels in strength and toughness, making it suitable for high-stress components like suspension control arms and engine brackets. It also offers good weldability, facilitating subsequent machining and assembly. However, cast steel involves greater process difficulty and higher costs, leading to a decline in its usage ratio under the trend toward lightweighting, though demand remains high in the heavy commercial vehicle sector. This is also one of the materials that requires attention during automotive parts and accessories procurement.

Aluminum alloy precision castings, owing to their low density and excellent heat dissipation, are widely used in components such as intake manifolds, turbocharger housings, and transmission cases. Its thermal conductivity is approximately three to four times that of cast iron, effectively controlling temperatures around the engine while offering significant advantages in weight reduction, aligning with the current lightweighting trend in automotive parts and accessories technology.

From the performance comparison of the four common materials mentioned above, it is evident that gray iron focuses on vibration and noise reduction, ductile iron balances strength and castability, cast steel handles high-stress conditions, and aluminum alloy excels in lightweighting and heat dissipation, each corresponding to different application scenarios. When conducting material selection for automotive parts and accessories, engineers should base their decisions on the actual working conditions of the component, integrating the material’s mechanical data, temperature resistance, and processing costs for a comprehensive judgment, ensuring the casting maintains stable and reliable operation throughout its service life.
