Carbon steel is low-cost, easy to machine, and simple to weld. It is perfectly adequate for common deck components like bolts, hinges, and brackets. However, its corrosion resistance is poor; exposure to seawater quickly leads to surface rust. Consequently, carbon steel fittings require regular painting and maintenance. In terms of price, brass occupies the mid-range between stainless steel and carbon steel. However, it has a significant drawback: dezincification. In seawater environments, chloride ions gradually leach zinc from the alloy, compromising structural strength. Over time, this can lead to cracking or perforation. Thus, brass is better suited for short-replacement-cycle, non-critical, or non-load-bearing applications.

Stainless steel accounts for a substantial proportion of marine hardware. Grades such as 304 and 316 demonstrate stable performance in marine environments. Specifically, 316 stainless steel contains molybdenum, which enhances its resistance to pitting corrosion, making it ideal for critical seawater-exposed components. While the initial procurement cost of stainless steel is higher than carbon steel, its long-term maintenance expenses are lower. With no frequent need for rust removal or repainting and a longer service life, it proves more cost-effective overall in most scenarios.

The core logic for selecting marine hardware materials lies in matching the usage environment and load requirements. Stainless steel or copper alloys are preferred for exposed, high-corrosion areas; aluminum alloys are selected for lightweight, non-load-bearing needs; carbon steel is acceptable for low-corrosion interior spaces. When purchasing marine hardware, materials should be matched to the specific environment rather than blindly chasing the lowest or highest price. Only this approach ensures true economic efficiency and practicality.
